It is critical to reflect on the reasons you are contemplating double majoring in college. You should evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of both choices. Some people choose to double major because they cannot decide on just one area of study. Others would like the opportunity to network with more students and faculty members. Others might feel that a double major will give them a leading edge with respect to finding employment after graduation. These are all valid reasons to pursue a double major, but before choosing to do so, conduct a bit of research. Speak with students who are double majors, as well as academic resources like professors and tutors. If, for instance, your reason is that you feel you would gain a competitive advantage when searching for a job, you should examine this point further. GCSE Exam Reforms GCSE Exam Reforms 2016 As you’ll no doubt have heard, GCSEs are in the process being overhauled by  the Department for Education and Ofqual. High on the hit list are GCSE English and GCSE Maths, which means that  these are the first subjects where students will be examined on the new  course content and via the new exam structure. These changes will affect any  student not already in Year 11 as of September 2015, whether they are 4 or  14 (as well as their tutors!) Here’s a quick summary of the changes: - No more modules. All GCSEs are now linear, meaning they will be  examined in the summer of Year 11 only. - No higher/lower tier papers (excluding Maths and Modern Foreign  Languages): all students sit the same paper. - No coursework for nearly all subjects â€" exams only! - No resits allowed, other than one reattempt at Maths and English  Language in the November following the original exam. - Grades A* - U replaced by numbers 9 â€" 1, where 9 is the highest  possible score. Current GCSE grade C will be replaced by numbers 4  and 5, with 5 being more demanding than the existing C grade. - New, more rigorous content for all courses. - No more GCSE English: now it’s either GCSE English Language,  GCSE English Literature, or both. All other subjects will be similarly overhauled ready for teaching in September  2016 and examination in summer 2018. The idea behind these reforms is to sure up the GCSE system, creating  results that employers and universities can trust, and that put the UK in line  with other top-performing countries on the global education spectrum, such as  Finland, Japan and Singapore. This could be great news for our economy, but  is it good news for our students? The answer is: yes, as long as they are prepared! Although MyGuru typically begins working with students at the high school level (and then continues on through college and beyond, helping with all standardized tests along the way), we have a variety of highly qualified tutors who are educated, trained, and certified to work with much younger students as well. So, when we were contacted about developing a small group tutoring program for students in grades 1-3, we reached out to a few of our tutors, and they showed enthusiastic interest in taking part in the program. The two teachers, Sara Howes (M.A. Teaching, Special Education Teacher and ACT Tutor at Northwestern Education Center) and Katie Cardella (M.A. Teaching, with experience in grades 1-3) will meet with parents, by appointment, at regular intervals during the program. The first six students to commit to the program will be guaranteed spots. If we get more interest, we will maintain a waiting list, an additional class will be scheduled, or the class expanded with additional teacher time to keep the 1:6 teacher/student ratio. LinkedIn just made a huge change to accommodate the ever-adapting workforce, and this is a bandwagon that you definitely want to jump on. LinkedIn just launched a new service called LinkedIn Profinder, which connects consumers with independent service providers. That’s right freelance people, this one is for you! This is a place where short-term gigs and freelance handiwork will thrive. I was so excited to see this addition, because on the regular platform, it was extremely hard for me to find anything in writing and editing that worked for me, but now I’ll be able to offer my writing service as a freelancer, and can also simply search for something temporary if I am short on cash. This is a goldmine for college students, because a lot of us will have more freelance experience as we earn our way towards our degrees so we will look good on these applications. This is calling all of you creative folk who like to design wedding invites, you life coaches, you math whizzes who can do people’s taxes, and so on. And who is to say that you only have to offer your own services? This is a great way for you to find local freelancers if you ever need help on something. Maybe you are trying to make a name for yourself with your art and need a professional looking website, which you don’t know how to really do, so you go on LinkedIn Profinder and get matched with the perfect web design freelancer for the job. There are over 150 service areas to choose from so far, and I’m sure this will grow as LinkedIn gathers more data on what the public wants. But how does it really work? Well, you get to put yourself out there for free until you hit 10 places, and then LinkedIn is going to require that you get a membership for $60 a month. This isn’t all bad since after you sign up, you can then submit your resume and profile an unlimited amount of times, meaning more business/services for you! The great thing is that LinkedIn is so popular and widespread that tons of people will be clicking on your freelance services, and you know that it’s a site that you can trust since people have to give their names, a photo, and you’ll be able to review their profile before agreeing to anything. If you are the one requesting a service, LinkedIn Profinder will try and get about five professionals to respond to your inquiry in 24 hours. You can use it for a freelance job now, build up some credibility and get some endorsements, and then use it later on for a 9-5 job, or continue with freelance. When thinking about what you want to put on your profile for Profinder, you might want to tweak it a bit from what you merely have printed on your resume. Sure, a client needs to know that you are qualified, but also seeing your dedication and how your service will be their best bet is a great thing to have in there as well.
